Cucumbers in Green Smoothies
Cucumbers are one of my favourite vegetables for Green Smoothies. Cucumber’s make a perfect compliment in your green smoothie because they’re extremely mild flavoured making them ideal for sneaking in. We get it, you want the health benefits of green smoothies, but you don’t want it to taste like bark.
- Healthy skin – Cucumbers are full of silica which promotes the healthy skin complexion. And they are primarily made up of water, which is essential for glowing skin.
- Nutrient rich – Lulora wrote a post about a simple yet game changing formula, Health= Nutrition/Calories. Foods that are high in nutrients and low in calories help regulate weight and promote overall well being. Think about it, if you’re eating foods that are low in calories but are loaded with nutrients (spinach, cucumber, broccoli, chard, kale etc.) it is HARD to be deficient in vitamins and minerals. Is there a simpler way to incorporate those foods than in a delicious smoothie?
- Digestion – Cucumber’s are high in fibre which help reduce toxins in the gut and improve overall digestion.
Combines Well With
Dominate, creamy fruits and vegetables such as bananas and avocados pair nicely with cucumbers. Cucumbers are primarily made up water so you’ll want ingredients that act as thickening agents. Generally speaking, the thickening agent will also make the base of the smoothie’s taste profile. A couple of examples include
- Protein Powders
- Full fat coconut milk
Cucumbers are sensitive to heat and when possible should be bought from the refrigerated section in the produce department. Avoid cucumbers with soft spots that are yellowing. You’re looking for firm, dark green cucumbers with rounded edges. When possible I always recommend buying organic and local. Non-Organic cucumbers are often coated with wax and they contain a great deal of pesticides relative to other fruits and vegetables. Personally, I can’t afford to buy everything organic and local, if you’ve got similar restrictions check out this site to help you determine which ones to buy organic.

1 tbsp – honey or pure maple syrup
